MAAI MARCHE

MAAI

A new brand〈MAAI〉for adult women who live lightly in the city will launch on Saturday, September 19, along with its first pop-up store, “MAAI MARCHE,” at CONTRAST. What 〈MAAI〉 values is the idea that style is not completed by clothing alone, but is created from the individuality and sensibility of the person wearing it, their mood of the day, and unexpected encounters. As a place to experience this worldview, the pop-up shop “MAAI MARCHE” will be held. Like a flea market you might casually stop by while traveling in Europe, these five days will be an opportunity to choose things you like based on your own sensibility and enjoy unexpected encounters with people and objects. At the venue, various contents that allow visitors to experience the brand’s worldview will be presented, including the first collection. We invite you to enjoy discovering the new style proposed by 〈MAAI〉 while spending time at your own “maai,” or sense of personal space and timing. — Date: 9/19 (Sat) - 9.23(Wed/ Holiday) Time: 12:00–19:00 Venue: CONTRAST

Artist Residence Meguru Yamaguchi

Meguru Yamaguchi

This summer, contemporary artist Meguru Yamaguchi spent about a month at CONTRAST continuing work on a 3 × 8.5-meter canvas he live-painted at X GAMES 2026. We feel a sense of connection in having Meguru Yamaguchi, who relocated to Japan after 19 years in New York, use CONTRAST as a creative studio. It was also a great opportunity to meet many of his friends, and made for a really good time.

Meguru Yamaguchi

A contemporary artist born in 1984 in Shibuya, Tokyo. After moving to the United States in 2007, he established his practice in Brooklyn, New York. Returning to Japan in 2026, he now works internationally from his base in Japan. Yamaguchi focuses and pursues the endless possibilities of brushstroke expressions, one of the most fundamental elements of painting, which are seen in his signature work series, “OUT OF BOUNDS”, with the concept of “transcending stereotypes, rules, borders and boundaries, as well as the expansion of painting” He stopped using canvases that restrained the physical area, and created an original method for materialising the unrestrained shapes of brushstrokes, enabling a dynamic and sculptural work style. Yamaguchi experienced the pivotal transition of Tokyo street culture from the 90’s to carly 2000’s. He has collaborated with major brands representing American street culture, such as ALIFE, BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB, FTC, HUF, NIKE. He has also collaborated with other international brands such as FENDI, ISSEY MIYAKE MEN, OAKLEY, and UNIQLO. In 2024, his artwork was featured on the official uniforms of the Japanese Men’s National Table Tennis Team through a project commissioned by the Japan Table Tennis Association. His works are included in numerous public and private collections, including the Ueshima Museum Collection, the Ogawa Collection, the Gifu Museum of Fine Arts, the Gunma Museum of Modern Art, the Ssamzie Collection, the FENDI Foundation, and UNIQLO Co., Ltd. His recent publication is “OUT OF BOUNDS” (Bijutsu Shuppan-sha / Art Publishing House).

About CONTRAST
In 2022, CONTRAST opened as a creative space in Yoyogi-Hachiman, Tokyo. The interior, based on a 45-year-old structure, consists of three floors under the concept of "reconstruction," and is managed by IN FOCUS, a digital branding studio that operates under the theme of "We propose new perspectives through a collective pursuit of digital excellence.". The space not only serves as its own creative space but also aims to be widely open to the public, providing a space for continuous and experimental reconstruction by its users, breaking free from limitations. Focusing on various forms of expression and encountering the creators who produce them, we will come to understand the importance of "CONTRAST = comparison" in our endeavors.
