Gureaza 2 - Grateful Others

Mon Koutaro Ooyama

CONTRAST is pleased to announce “Grateful Others 2,” a solo exhibition by Nara-based artist Mon Koutaro Ooyama, which will be held from Saturday, September 21st to Friday, October 4th. "Grateful Others" is an ongoing exhibition based on the concept of a fictional manga series. In this context, "Others" refers to everything that exists beyond our recognition. "Grateful Others" represents the process of constructing metacognition and deepening introspection by contemplating these Others. Following last year's solo exhibition at mograg gallery, the connection between the various works in the exhibition creates a rhetoric that evokes a narrative. Through this exhibition, visitors will experience the artist's cosmology, rooted in Early Buddhism, Zen, and physicality. We look forward to your visit.

between pixel and particle

Sander Wassink

CONTRAST is pleased to announce “between pixel and particle,” a solo exhibition by Sander Wassink, a Dutch artist and designer based in Japan and the Netherlands, from June 29th, Saturday to July 14th, Sunday. As Wassink lives in Japan and works primarily for European clients, his daily life unfolds largely within the digital realm—through pixels, screens, and virtual interactions. While this mode of existence has its advantages, it has, over time, fostered a profound sense of disconnection from the tactile world that exists outside his studio. This exhibition arises from his personal quest to reconcile these two realms, softening the divide and addressing the alienation he has felt. The primary goal of the work is to push him away from my computer and towards engaging with the physical world. The exhibition invites visitors to contemplate the flow of energy that connects the dots between pixel and particle, digital and physical, isolation and interconnectedness. Each piece is a portal through which we might glimpse the foundational energies that animate both our world and the digital one. From a tent that resembles the artist's land, the exhibition consists of found objects, a world where digital and nature intersect, and an installation that spans three floors. On the B1F level, where he collaborated with the publishing label Rondade to create a spatial composition, an art book that compiles the 10 years of his works will also be on display and for sale. We hope you will visit and experience the flow of this energy and make new discoveries at the intersection of the digital and physical worlds. We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition. ー Cooperation: Rondade

Sander Wassink

In the midst of constant construction and production, Wassink shifts the focus to what is discarded, abandoned, and left behind, with the aim of reconstructing their potential. Whether it is the facade of a partially demolished building or the everyday remnants of a culture of overproduction, he explores undeveloped and unknown forms and aesthetics waiting to be discovered and appreciated. His works are in the collections of museums around the world, including MoMA in New York and Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

About CONTRAST
In 2022, CONTRAST opened as a creative space in Yoyogi-Hachiman, Tokyo. The interior, based on a 45-year-old structure, consists of three floors under the concept of "reconstruction," and is managed by IN FOCUS, a digital branding studio that operates under the theme of "We propose new perspectives through a collective pursuit of digital excellence.". The space not only serves as its own creative space but also aims to be widely open to the public, providing a space for continuous and experimental reconstruction by its users, breaking free from limitations. Focusing on various forms of expression and encountering the creators who produce them, we will come to understand the importance of "CONTRAST = comparison" in our endeavors.
