EARLY LIFE:
Belonging to a multicultural family, she spent her childhood in the Caribbean on a tiny island called Anguilla. Here she fell in love with nature, the white sands, desert-like terrain and the mythological stories of the Arawaks. In her adolescence, her family moved to the Northeast of the United States, where she fell in love with all things Anime, Sci-Fi fantasy, and comic books galore. Always with a pencil, marker or paint brush she loved escaping within her artistic expression. Within each environment she found herself to be the only American Asian within her cultural sphere, albeit her sister. These experiences created a deep interest in other cultures, psychology, nature vs. nurture, identity and discovery, and finding her place within the modern world.
EDUCATION/EARLY CAREER:
Coral attended Pratt Institute, a world renowned Art School located in the heart of Brooklyn. Here, she submerged herself with the cultural sphere of New York City and honed her skills in Communication Design. After years of working within design and art direction + youth culture brands such as Apple, Converse, Nike, Diesel and Adidas. Coral loved the inspirational messages she was able to tell through these various platforms but ultimately wanted to tell her own story on her own canvas. She ultimately left New York City to explore living in Paris, then Madrid and finally landed to Berlin to find her artistic voice.
THE SPARK:
Berlin was the place she found her spark, and the strength to put her experiences on canvas. “I discovered that by internalising the world and the frustrations that come with it, the obligations in which we trap ourselves in, all the while keeping a stoic demeanour can tear you apart. As a woman in the Digital age, these “Invisible Rules” seep in subconsciously, through the back door. It’s important that these rules are pulled into the light.”
Within her work she explores the narratives of Internet archetypes, brand worship, Social Media expectations, Cultural + Personal identity, Ritual and societal unrest. Coral is influenced by mythological figures, symbolism of the Tarot, the cult of Nike, Renaissance paintings, Tech Noir, Dystopian Punk Anime, religious iconography to incorporate into her work.
