We held an open studio for three days from January 14th, Friday to 16th, Sunday at CONTRAST. At 1F and 2F, you could see the artworks and work in progress by Ichi Tashiro, who was in a solo exhibition at Gallery COMMON in February. Norimichi Hirakawa, who held a solo exhibition at the Yutaka Kikutake Gallery from January 8th, Saturday, presented a video installation that transforms the color, movement, and shape of video data in a six-dimensional space at B1F. Ichi Tashiro

Born in 1984. He has been obsessed with making scrapbooks since he was a child, and collecting manga and magazine clippings was his therapy as a boy. It also empowered him to create his own worldview in a strict family environment, allowing him to “free his brain and imagination from the suffocation of the present. At the age of 18, he moved to New York City with only a couple of pieces of clothing and a backpack filled with art supplies, taught himself art, and began his career by selling his work on the street. After 5 years in the New York art scene, he moved to Hong Kong and spent 9 years actively exhibiting in art fairs and exhibitions in Asia and Europe, establishing a presence. He is currently based in Tokyo.

Norimichi Hirakawa

Born in 1982. In 2016, he began work on the “datum” series of works at a residency at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe. In 2016, he was awarded a residency at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe to create the “datum” series of works, which were shown at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and the Sapporo International Art Festival pre-event. In 2005, he was awarded a residency at the Alma Telescope, located at an altitude of about 5000 meters in Chile, and presented the latest version at Roppongi Crossing 2019. He is based in Sapporo since 2019.

About CONTRAST: In 2022, CONTRAST opened as a creative space in Yoyogi-Hachiman, Tokyo. The interior, based on a 45-year-old structure, consists of three floors under the concept of "reconstruction," and is managed by IN FOCUS, a digital branding studio that operates under the theme of "We propose new perspectives through a collective pursuit of digital excellence.". The space not only serves as its own creative space but also aims to be widely open to the public, providing a space for continuous and experimental reconstruction by its users, breaking free from limitations. Focusing on various forms of expression and encountering the creators who produce them, we will come to understand the importance of "CONTRAST = comparison" in our endeavors.
