Narcolepsy1999 will hold the Tokyo edition of the five-city solo exhibition tour “Garakuta” at CONTRAST from Friday, June 20 to Sunday, June 29. ー As I began to write a statement for this solo exhibition tour, I noticed how many exhibition texts these days are filled with phrases spun out by generative AI. That’s precisely why I chose to write this one in broken, old-style Japanese—like a relic from a bygone era—because, after all, I’m still a human. I wanted to make that clear. For a long time, my work has explored themes like “what we hold dear: objects, time, and space.” And while I searched for the perfect word to express the essence of what’s ultimately precious, I stumbled upon “Garakuta”—a word that seemed to fit just right. Even when chipped, broken, no longer functional, or missing their original form, there are things we still want to keep close. That feeling of cherishing what cannot be replaced became the foundation of these works. If any of these pieces become your version of “ultimately precious,” that would bring me true happiness.
