CASE STUDY EXHIBITION 02

Tapetum

Insect Art Collective Tapetum will hold a one-day solo exhibition,"CASE STUDY EXHIBITION 02" on October 2nd, Sunday at CONTRAST. Tapetum connects insect ecology and phenomena to contemporary society and expresses them as experiences. In this exhibition, they interpret the culture and aesthetics of enjoying the sound of chirping insects popular in the Edo period in a contemporary way and present works developed as installations where visitors can actually hear the sounds made by thrushes and crickets. We hope everyone will enjoy the traditional yet new sounds of insects through the installation using the space at the end of summer.

GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1999, graduated from Tama Art University in 2021 with a degree in Japanese painting. His main activity is "JYU", a 7-year project he has been organizing. In addition to exhibiting his own works, he also directs exhibitions and live events. Growing up with manga, movies, and other subcultures, he has developed works and exhibitions focusing on the city of Tokyo and its youth. He uses 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and installation as forms of expression. He also curates at gallery CON_ in Bakurocho, Nihonbashi.

Taiki Yokote

Born in Zushi City, Kanagawa in 1998. Enrolled in the Department of Sculpture, and graduated School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Focusing on objects that are rarely noticed in our daily lives, he brings out their "wild side" by using gimmicks and a sculptural approach that utilizes the movement of ready-made objects. While focusing on sculptures and installations with movement, in recent years he has expanded his range of expression to include video.

Kurachi Tomonosuke

Born in 1997, in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Currently enrolled in the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts. He pursues the "hilariousness" of ordinary, everyday actions and events, as well as words used in daily life, in his unique way, using video and figurative art. The Japanese word "hilarity" includes various elements such as "funny,""interesting," and so on. For example, he attempts to reveal the invisible "funniness" that can be contained within a single theme, such as foodstuffs and their cooking methods and manners, by exploring their historical and cultural backgrounds, deconstructing them, and repeatedly reconstructing them using my own body and objects.

Zhiyu Wang

Born in 1999 in Heilongjiang Province, China. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Painting, Oil Painting Course. Currently enrolled in the First Laboratory of Techniques and Materials, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Inspired by world myths, legends, biology, mysticism, psychoanalysis, and the unknown, she creates paintings, sculptures, and installations. She harmonizes opposing qualities such as the union of living and non-living entities, artificial and natural, male and female, yin and yang, matter and consciousness. She also searches for ways to communicate with animals, angels, and the Holy Spirit, and to connect with other worlds.

Hans Chew

Born in Singapore. Ceramic artist. Majoring in ceramics at Tama Art University, Department of Crafts. With themes of otherness, warmth, and strangeness, he has exhibited her works in various media, mainly ceramics. He considers clay as a tactile medium and believes that the act of thinking with both hands is as important as the ability to conceptualize and communicate one's consciousness.

About CONTRAST
In 2022, CONTRAST opened as a creative space in Yoyogi-Hachiman, Tokyo. The interior, based on a 45-year-old structure, consists of three floors under the concept of "reconstruction," and is managed by IN FOCUS, a digital branding studio that operates under the theme of "We propose new perspectives through a collective pursuit of digital excellence.". The space not only serves as its own creative space but also aims to be widely open to the public, providing a space for continuous and experimental reconstruction by its users, breaking free from limitations. Focusing on various forms of expression and encountering the creators who produce them, we will come to understand the importance of "CONTRAST = comparison" in our endeavors.
